California targets ultra-processed meals in new well being initiative


(Reuters) – California Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday issued an govt order aiming to crack down on ultra-processed meals together with packaged snacks and sugary drinks, and additional examine the well being results of artificial meals dyes.

The order directs exploring the usage of public funds from California’s hospitals and Medi-Cal Managed Care program to enhance native entry to contemporary, wholesome meals and advance public well being.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT

The order cites a brand new 2025 Dietary Pointers Advisory Committee report indicating that 73% of U.S. adults aged 20 and older are obese or overweight, and 38% of youngsters and youth aged 12 to 19 are prediabetic.

CONTEXT
