Canada imposes sanctions on 14 Venezuelan officers


OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada on Friday imposed sanctions on 14 present and former senior officers of the Venezuelan authorities, alleging that that they had engaged in actions which have supported human rights violations in Venezuela.

The sanctions coincide with measures taken by Canada’s allies together with the US and United Kingdom (TADAWUL:4280), and “show a message of solidarity with the Venezuelan individuals,” the Canadian overseas ministry stated in an announcement.

The Venezuelan communications ministry didn’t instantly reply to a request for touch upon Friday’s new and expanded sanctions from international locations together with the US and Britain.

President Nicolas Maduro, who was sworn in for a 3rd time period on Friday, and his authorities have all the time rejected sanctions by the US and others, saying they’re illegitimate measures that quantity to an “financial warfare” designed to cripple Venezuela.

Maduro and his allies have cheered what they are saying is the nation’s resilience regardless of the measures, although they’ve traditionally blamed some financial hardships and shortages on sanctions.
