Donald Trump says the US and the EU have agreed to postpone the imposition of tariffs till July, as they try to barter a commerce deal.
It comes after the president of the European Fee, Ursula von der Leyen, mentioned in a submit on social media website X that she had spoken to Mr Trump and expressed that they wanted till 9 July to “attain a great deal”.
President Trump had threatened earlier this week to impose 50% tariffs on items getting into the US from the EU from subsequent month, with European leaders saying they had been prepared to reply.
The US president reignited fears of a commerce struggle between the 2 powers when he mentioned talks had been “going nowhere”.
“We had a really good name and I agreed to maneuver it. I imagine July ninth can be the date. That was the date she requested. She mentioned we are going to quickly get collectively and see if we are able to work one thing out,” the US president added.
On his so-called “liberation day” final month, Mr Trump unleashed tariffs on lots of America’s commerce companions. However since then he is backed down in a spiralling tit-for-tat tariff face-off with China, and struck a take care of the UK.
A lot of his most incendiary rhetoric on commerce has been directed at Brussels, although, even going so far as to assert the EU was created to tear the US off.
Responding to his 50% tariff risk, EU commerce chief Maros Sefcovic mentioned: “EU-US commerce is unmatched and have to be guided by mutual respect, not threats.
“We stand able to defend our pursuits.”
